Sunrise Farm Rebuild

Sunrise Farm is located in Sitapaila, a stone’s throw from the historic Swayambhu temples of Western Kathmandu.

Its facilities were badly damaged by the earthquakes which struck in April and May 2015.

Prior to the disasters Sunrise was a community farm programme committed to the demonstration and training of sustainable agriculture and community development techniques.

Over the previous 25 years, the farm had welcomed thousands of visitors from Nepal and internationally to observe, learn and volunteer. The farm had also been a marketing hub for farmers elsewhere in Nepal, selling their products such as honey, pulses and garlic. This helped rural farmers gain an income from their land.

However, this important work was badly disrupted by the earthquake damage.

In response IDV provided volunteers to help rebuild Sunrise Farm. We provided both technical support, through our in-house engineer and skilled builders, and also general volunteer labour to help rebuild the farm’s livestock shelter.

This work helped Sunrise recover and continue its vital work promoting sustainable agriculture and livelihoods across Nepal.
