Planza Island School

The Paaralang Elementary School is located on Planza Island, not far from Tacloban.

The school was damaged by typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda in the Philippines) leaving its 204 kids without a safe place to receive an education.

In October 2014 we began working to help the school recover from the typhoon.

We began by partnering with Volunteer For the Visayans (VFV) to repair and equip a computer classroom. The classroom was made secure and electrically safe. We also worked with community members to build furniture for the classroom.

With this work complete the Philippine Department of Education has since provided 8 computers and 2 projectors.  These are allowing the kids to learn important skills for the future.

In 2015 we continued our work by repairing the school’s other damaged classrooms.

We repaired major damage to one classroom which was badly exposed to the elements and, as a result, the kids are no longer forced to abandon class during rainy weather. We also repaired leaking roofs on other classrooms.

We completed our work to date by repairing the school's stage, which is used for many events for the kids and for the community as a whole. We also provided furniture for each classroom.

We would still like to replace the internal ceilings inside the classrooms, and build a playground for the kids. But we can’t undertake this additional work without your help.
