The Pitogo Elementary School is located in the municipality of Jaro, which is almost 2 hours from Tacloban.
The school was devastated by typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda in the Philippines) leaving its 129 kids learning in appalling and dangerous conditions.
Other NGO’s fixed several buildings but the grade 5 classroom was left with only tarps for a roof.
During rains the water poured in, and the classroom’s internal ceiling was in danger of collapsing and injuring a child.
So, in June 2015 we supported the school by completely replacing the classroom’s roof and internal ceiling. We also repainted the inside and outside of the building to give it a fresh, welcoming feel.
Finally, we made repairs to another building’s badly damaged roof. This building is scheduled for demolition but our work made sure that no children will be hurt before this happens.
